PEBBLES continence management service provides specialistcontinence advice and support to children aged
0 - 16 years with a disability.


In 2013, the Continence Advisory Service of WA established a partnership with Therapy Focus to deliver PEBBLES.

PEBBLES is a new continence management service for children aged 0 - 16 years with a disability. THe service is the first of its kind in Western Australia and is available to eligible children throughout the state.

The PEBBLES acronym stands for: Providing Education on Bladder and Bowel Health, Liaison, Expert Advice and Support.


The Service

PEBBLES is funded by the Disability Services Commission and managed by Therapy Focus.

The service provides specialist continence advice, aids and support for children with disabilities who experience bladder and/or bowel health issues, continence issues and require support with toilet training.

PEBBLES services are tailored to include:

  • Assessment
  • Management options
  • Advice on toilet training and continence
  • Advice on continence aids (e.g. nappies and pads)
  • Referral to subsidy schemes (where the child meets the eligibility conditions
  • Information and education for the client/family and health care professionals, education and childcare providers.

Services are delivered by a team of healthcare professionals including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, registered nurses and specialist consultants, who have a wealth of knowledge in children's continence issues and disability.

The PEBBLES team work in collaboration with families, education staff, therapists and other health care professionals. Advice and support is also provided to other family members who require assistance or support with toileting training issues as part of the service.

PEBBLES services are delivered via home and school visits, as well as from clinics located in Cockburn (Rocky Bay clients), Fremantle, Maddington, Mirrabooka and Mandurah.

Regional visits are planned according to need, with PEBBLES services delivered to families living in regional and remote areas via telephone, video and web conferencing facilities.



Referrals may be made to the PEBBLES continence service for children with constipation, faecal incontinence/soiling, day-time wetting, as well as advice and support for toilet training/ toileting programs, continence products and subsidies.

Referrals will be accepted from families, General Practitioners (GPs), Paediatricians, other health care professionals, education staff and childcare staff.


Referral Criteria

  • Child is aged 0-16 years.
  • Child has Australian Permanent Residency status
  • Child is eligible to receive disability services or has a continence condition as a result of a permanent congenital disability.
  • Child has toilet training or continence issues, including day wetting, constipation or faecal incontinence (soiling).
  • Child does not already access continence services from a specialty continence service (e.g. Princess Margaret Hospital Continence Clinic)
  • Primary reason for continence issues is not as a result of a primary psychiatric disorder.

NB: Where bed wetting is the sole issue, referral will be made to a bed wetting clinic.
